"The Watchmaker's Wife" by Lydia S. Gray was today's offering from Daily Science Fiction. The Builder of Dreams makes a perfect clockwork wife for an old watchmaker, but the watchmaker dies before he can claim her. A villain murders the Builder of Dreams, steals the clockwork wife, and turns her into a whore.
The story evokes disturbing images and depicts depravity and cruelty. It is not for the faint of heart, and the editors so warn.
The harsh subject manner notwithstanding, the tale is beautifully, if brutally, told. It is not something that most would choose to read or enjoy reading--and that is exactly why it should be read. 7 rocket-dragons.
