It's "out of the frying pan and into the fire" in
Wearaway and Flambeau by Matthew Hughes, the featured novelette in the July/August edition of
Fantasy & Science Fiction. A professional thief runs amok of the local wizard guild. The protagonist, Raffalon the thief, is a likable character. The story is well-written, paced well, and original enough that cliche does not lead to boredom. I wouldn't mind reading more stories from the fantasy world that Mr. Hughes has created.
