Review of Oracle by Cate Marvin
Oracle by Cate Marvin was offered by Poets.org's Poem-A-Day on February 11, 2013. The poet reveals in her notes that the poem juxtaposes images and thoughts surrounding the suicide of Sylvia Plath, a favorite poet of Ms. Marvin's, with those of the brutal rape of a teenaged girl that occurred in Ohio in 2012. Feelings of injustice, humiliation, and rancor leap out of this powerful poem, about women who "take Blake over breakfast" only to be treated as a "worn out throw-rug beneath feet that stomp out the most intricate weave." I don't usually go for overtly feminist poetry, but this one really spoke to me somehow.
