New Story: "Poetic License"
In my latest piece of flash science fiction, "Poetic License" (exactly 1,000 words), a police detective must hunt down his brother for the crime of publishing poetry without a license. I used a new scheme for writing this one--I wrote the ending first. One of the things that I (and others) have noticed about many of my stories is that the endings could be stronger. This time, I wrote a powerful ending to a story without even thinking about its beginning or middle. Then I continued writing it backwards until I arrived at a logical beginning. From there, the story, including the ending, just needed a little tweaking. The writing of this story proved to be an interesting exercise--one to which I most definitely will return from time to time.
