Review of Gate of Freedom by Deema K. Shehabi
Gate of Freedom by Deema K. Shehabi was offered by Poets.org's Poem-A-Day on March 10, 2013. The piece is really four poems in one: Gate of Freedom, Gate of Love, Gate of the Sun, and Gate of Peace. Inspired by a terrorist hunger striker protesting his imprisonment, the poem uses images of need and want juxtaposed against those of wealth and plenty to remind the reader that there are still many places in the world that are crushed by poverty and war. Once I allowed myself to take the politics out of it, I actually found it to be a beautiful piece.
