The author's explains his elaborate metaphor in his notes. I am tempted to reveal it here, but instead will recommend reading the notes before reading the story. In general, I believe that stories and poems that need explanations should be rewritten until they don't, which is why I gave this otherwise well-written tale 3 rocket-dragons.

Review of "The Man and the River" by Therese Pieczynski
The author's explains his elaborate metaphor in his notes. I am tempted to reveal it here, but instead will recommend reading the notes before reading the story.
