"Mirror, Mirror" by Davyne DeSye appeared in Daily Science Fiction on March 26, 2013. "A soldier does his best to keep a group of children calm during a war while they await rescue by friendly forces or capture by the alien ants."
The author does a good job in the creation of suspense and dread as the reader wonders whether the children will be saved or doomed. The inner conflict of the soldier was interesting--I wish the author had delved deeper here. 4 out of 7 rocket-dragons.
