Failure is depressing. Take writing, for example. I receive at least one rejection from a potential publisher every day--often more than once a day. The sheer volume of rejections can beat a writer down...if he allows it. I don't. I try to see a rejection as a kind of success. At the least, each time my writing is rejected by a publisher, I have found yet another inappropriate market for my work. The fifth in my series of greeting card poems on the theme of "encouragement" is based upon this kind of positive thinking--without which I would have given up long ago.
