Leeches were used by doctors in the Dark Ages for blood-letting to such a degree that physicians back then were called "leeches." Modern medicine uses leeches to relieve venous congestion after reconstructive surgery, and the anticoagulant enzyme in leeches has been isolated and is being used in patients who cannot tolerate heparin. In my flash fiction piece,"Leech," a doctor on tour in Madagascar discovers a leech (or, shall we say, the leech discovers her) that has a unique potential medical use.
