Epistle: Leaving by Kerrin McCadden was offered by Poets.org's
Poem-A-Day on June 21, 2013. The poet reveals in her notes that, as she wrote the poem, she thinking about "synecdoche and mathematics." Ooh, now there's a five dollar word. "Synecdoche," for those of us who don't know (I had to look it up) is the literary device where a part is meant to represent the whole or vice versa. For example, "I just received a Dear John," where "Dear John" represents a certain type of epistle. (At least I knew the meaning of "epistle").
