"Late August on the Lido" by John Hollander was offered by Poets.org's Poem-A-Day on August 20, 2013. The poet died at the age of eighty-three only three days ago. The poem has an unusual rhyme-scheme, particularly in the first two stanzas, which enhances the nostalgic imagery. It ends on a somewhat sombre note. There is a hint of the renewal of spring, but also a sense of the ephemerality of a perfect summer day.
