Ms. Berssenbrugge reveals in her notes that she was inspired by a drought of several years' duration in her home state of New Mexico that caused her to yearn for greener days. We experienced a drought last year and into this in Kansas, and it was devastating--a slow, blistering roast that cracked the ground, withered the crops, and destroyed once lush lawns. I could have used Ms. Berssenbrugge's poem then to cheer me up. Right now, as I write this, it is raining.
