New Poem: "Heat"
"Heat" is the latest addition to my collection, A Wave of Poetry. The prevention of heat casualties was one of my biggest concerns as a deployed flight surgeon. United States Air Force airmen are so dedicated that they will work in the heat until they drop if you let them. The secret to preventing this was getting them to take breaks in the shade and to drink enough cold water. One needed to be sneaky in order to accomplish this mission. For example, I might casually walk up to an airman and interrupt him in his duties on some pretext or just make chit chat. As I did this, I would surreptitiously walk him towards some shade and press a cold bottle of water into his hand.
