Rafael and I graduated from the same class at Amherst. We were both pre-meds, so we knew each other, although we did socialize with different crowds. Rafael went on to attend Harvard Medical School where he continues to practice medicine. Since graduating from college, he has had numerous books of poetry published and has won many prestigious literary awards and fellowships. In addition to his medical practice, he teaches creative writing at Lesley University in Boston. More biographical information may be found here:

More essay than poem, "Hospital Writing Workshop" describes the transcendental power observed by Dr. Campo of directly facing end-of-life issues and serious illnesses through the the use of poetry.
