The Butterfly
Steven Wittenberg Gordon
For Rebecca
Out of the chrysalis,
the caterpillar’s masterwork,
at the appointed time,
another form emerges--
crawling caterpillar no longer,
the beautiful butterfly
spreads its diaphanous wings
and readies itself to face
the warm sunshine
and gentle breezes
as well as the driving rain
and violent storms of life,
painting colored trails on the wind
the envy of rainbows.
