Memory Scrap
Sierra July
I clutch a
yellowed card
“Happy Birthday”
reads through
Ripped fringes,
coffee stains
The bin beckons,
mouth wide
But I cling on,
staring
Till my eyes burn,
water
Over your pen
scrawled name
Poet’s Notes: Cleaning out old papers, I realized how hard it can be to
throw some things out. Be they old holiday or birthday cards, gift cards or
scraps of paper someone you care for wrote something on. Like photos, they can
hold memories, and though some things must be disposed of to avoid clutter, the
memories remain.
