Gateway Part 7
Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg, Contest Judge
from the Tao Te Ching
7. The great way is easy/ yet people prefer the side paths.
The way alongside, the distractions
from even the banks of the river
to the crest over the horizon.
I struggle to see, and not seeing, forget.
Meanwhile: the neon orange
of the Baltimore Oriole's belly.
The way the cat's white fur stands up in breath
or how young leaves practice their scales.
Who says the side paths aren't the way?
